Alsana will be observing Eating Disorder Awareness Week (EDAW) with the rest of the country February 23rd – March 1st, 2014. The week-long event encourages individuals, families, and treatment providers to spread the word about the warning signs and the impacts of eating disorders.
To celebrate the week, Alsana has a number of events planned. Kicking off the week a day early, Alsana will host an alumni event on Saturday, February 22, during which time alumni are invited back to the facility to celebrate their recovery and encourage others.
Then, two alumni of Alsana, as well as the Alumni Group director, Nancy Finefield, will be speaking at the University of Missouri – Columbia on February 25th. They will talk about eating disorders and the importance of recovery and awareness of these serious conditions. In addition, an alumni webinar will be held in February 25th with Dr. Nicole Siegfried about the topic of Creating a Life Worth Living in ED Recovery. More information about all of these events can be found on the Alsana events page.
Alsana II clients are going to celebrate EDAW in a special way. They chose to forfeit an outing in order to make recovery books for each other. The books will include art work, inspirational quotes, and blank pages for notes and other meaningful messages from each other. The clients at Alsana I will participate in building a light box project to symbolize hope that recovery from eating disorders is possible.
On February 27th, Alsana will be at MaryvilleUniversity in St. Louis for a screening of “Someday Melissa,” a documentary of one young woman’s struggle with an eating disorder. The screening is being sponsored by the Missouri Eating Disorders Association (MOEDA), and Alsana will have a booth at the event.
Alsana will also be participating in the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP) Conference, which will be held February 27th -March 2 in St. Petersburg, FL. The annual conference will bring together treatment providers and professionals to learn about the latest trends in eating disorder treatment. Alsana’s Nancy Albus, Hallie Metzler, Nicole Siegfried and Deana Wilson will all be attending the conference and will sponsor a booth and exhibitions.
Eating Disorder Awareness Week is an important tool in helping the public understand the seriousness of these disorders. It is also a time for those in recovery to celebrate their wellness and to make connections with others that have gone through the same struggles.
