GIVING YOURSELF THE GIFT OF RECOVERY FROM AN EATING DISORDER

  Blog

During this time of year, many of us are consumed with gift giving, and with finding the perfect presents for the people we love. But this year, the most significant gift you give may be the one you give to yourself—the gift of recovery from an eating disorder.

You’re worth it—and while it may not be in your power to fully recover from an eating disorder all on your own, overnight and without any ongoing effort, there are certainly some steps you can take this holiday season to put your health and wellbeing first.

So give yourself the gift of recovery from an eating disorder. Start with these significant steps.

  • Invest in relationships: You’ll never recover from an eating disorder if you try to do it all by yourself. You need someone to lean on. You need encouragement and support. So spend some time reconnecting with people and simply treasuring the relationships you have.
  • Talk to someone: Seek the support and comfort you so desperately need. Find a trusted loved one or friend and be real with them about your worries and your struggle. Let them know you’re ready for recovery, and that their support is invaluable to you.
  • Get a hobby: Sound frivolous? It’s anything but. A key to recovery is finding some outlet for yourself—a creative endeavor or simply something to occupy your time.
  • Put the books away. Don’t send yourself into a tailspin or worry by obsessing over diet books or nutritional guides. Put them away. Take the focus off food for a while.
  • Seek treatment. Remember that this is a medical condition, and not one you’re just going to snap out of. Don’t be afraid to seek out the compassionate, individualized care you need in order to make a full recovery.
