Abstract:
This presentation explores the integration of Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) with movement-based interventions to treat athletes struggling with eating disorders. Athletes face unique challenges related to body image, performance pressures, and identity, which can exacerbate key fears that lead to the development of eating disorder behaviors. Addressing the impact of eating disorder behaviors on athletes is imperative for improving performance-related consequences associated with disordered eating. Applying movement interventions through a CFT lens, providers can cultivate self-compassion, improve body awareness, and promote a healthy relationship with food and movement as part of the recovery process. This whole-person approach encourages athletes to reconnect with their bodies and learn to use food and movement as forms of self-care in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.
Learning Objectives:
1. Explore the psychological and emotional challenges specific to athletes that contribute to the development and maintenance of eating disorders.
2. Introduce Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), emphasizing its role in reducing shame and self-criticism.
3. Discuss the benefits of incorporating movement-based interventions through a CFT lens to promote mind-body awareness, self-care, and a positive relationship with exercise.
