Neuroplastic Healing: Skills-Based Interventions for DID and OSDD

Presented By Sarah Chipps, PsyD

Abstract:
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and Other Specified Dissociative Disorder (OSDD) are complex trauma-related conditions rooted in adaptations to overwhelming, chronic childhood experiences.

Research over the past decade has illuminated how prolonged developmental trauma alters brain structure and function, particularly impacting systems involved in emotional regulation, memory integration, interoception, and self-awareness. These neurobiological changes can drive persistent dissociative symptoms, including amnesia, depersonalization, derealization, and identity fragmentation.

This presentation explores how teaching targeted, brain-based skills found in the Finding Solid Ground Workbook can support individuals with DID and OSDD in gaining greater stability and self-regulation. Attendees will be introduced to core neurobiological disruptions seen in complex dissociation, and learn how specific interventions can leverage neuroplasticity to strengthen adaptive neural pathways and give clients more choice over their dissociative experiences.

Concrete strategies for introducing and adapting these skills in clinical settings will be discussed, emphasizing practical tools for supporting clients’ efforts to reconnect with the present, manage dissociative intrusions, and heal their relationships to themselves.

Learning Objectives:
1. Attendees will learn how and trauma disrupts neurobiology as seen in complex dissociation.
2. Participants will learn how specific skills based interventions — such as grounding, separating past from present, containment imagery, and cognitive restructuring can strengthen adaptive neural pathways.
3. Attendees will learn concrete strategies for facilitating these skills in clinical settings.
