Get Involved with National Eating Disorders Awareness Week

Though it’s sobering even to consider, eating disorders will impact some 30 million Americans at some point in their lifetime. Conditions such as anorexia, bulimia, and Binge Eating Disorder—among others—are all too common, and yet we talk about them far too infrequently. There remains much stigma surrounding the topic of eating disorders, and much discomfort in even broaching the subject.

The consequences of this stigma? Many people struggle with an eating disorder and never realize that they can get help; they never know that treatment works, and that recovery is possible. Meanwhile, many loved ones, friends, and family members remain in the dark about how eating disorders work, and are unsure of how to help the people who need it.

That’s why the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) holds an annual National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. This year’s event comes at the end of February—specifically February 26 through March 4—and Alsana is proud to be a partner.

About NEDA Week

According to the NEDA website, “The goal of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (#NEDAwareness) is to shine the spotlight on eating disorders by educating the public, spreading a message of hope, and putting life-saving resources into the hands of those in need.”

Continues the site: “During NEDAwareness Week communities across the country join the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) to raise awareness through social media campaigns, legislative advocacy, building lightings, local events, and many more activities.”

It’s Time to Talk About It

Each year’s Awareness Week comes with a unique theme, and this year’s is a theme that we at Alsana are especially passionate about. The theme: “It’s Time to Talk About It.”

“By starting conversations, busting myths, sharing the online screening tool, and framing eating disorders in a more holistic way, we can reach new audiences by sharing resources and diverse stories of recovery,” the NEDA site says.

We agree, and we think it’s incredibly important to make the public dialogue about eating disorders broader, less stigmatized. We believe this for a handful of reasons:

Open conversation gives people knowledge. When we talk about eating disorders, openly and honestly, it helps break down myths and misconceptions. It eradicates the idea that an eating disorder is simply a matter of willpower, or that it can be controlled. It helps caregivers to be more compassionate, and those with eating disorders to know how they can get help.

Information leads to advocacy. When you know how serious and life-threatening eating disorders are—and when you also know that treatment works and recovery is attainable—it turns you into an ambassador for recovery, and a true agent of change.

It saves lives. Ultimately, when we’re willing to talk about eating disorders, it shows people that they don’t have to accept their condition as a helpless one. They can get better, and live full and happy lives, when they seek recovery at a community like Alsana.
