WEIGHT STIGMA IN THE PROVIDER COMMUNITY

  Blog

One of the most significant places where weight stigma is a problem is within the provider community of the healthcare system, because in many ways we look to this community to have a certain knowledge and sensitivity. There can be the issue of pressure to maintain what is considered a healthy weight, which can sometimes be unique for a person in recovery from an eating disorder. Also, some healthcare providers may not have an awareness about the prevalence and seriousness of eating disorders, especially as it pertains to a particular patient.

Being an “ideal” weight, or having a healthcare provider making judgements about weight isn’t always healthy for someone in recovery, unless the provider is one who has experience with and understanding of eating disorders. Sometimes above what is considered “average” weight for a particular height, is a healthy and strong, normal weight for a person who has been struggling with bulimia or anorexia.

While it may be a challenge, setting boundaries with healthcare providers who want to see a lower weight when someone is healthy and in eating disorder recovery, is a necessary step. It’s important to remember that employment health providers, and general practitioners may not have the knowledge of eating disorders that the recovery community has. It’s been reported that: “In the five years it takes to complete a residency training program, residents typically receive only three hours of instruction on eating disorders.”

Weight stigma can be so prevalent that it can be difficult in situations with health providers to recognize when it’s taking place. Stigma can come in a variety of forms, and part of being in recovery is protecting your health and progress from negative influences. Don’t ever be afraid to advocate for yourself. Become your own champion and don’t hesitate to encourage awareness and understanding of the seriousness of eating disorders.
