SETTING UP FOR SUCCESS: NAVIGATING EATING DISORDER RECOVERY IN THE WORKPLACE

  Blog

Recovery from an eating disorder takes time, patience and commitment; in many ways, it is a lifelong journey. Eventually, though, you will have to return to your normal life—including your job. The transition back into the workforce can be a little daunting, but it does not have to be. The trick is to be strategic in creating an environment where your recovery comes first—where you can remain committed to finishing the journey you have started.

What can you do to position yourself for success in the workplace—not just career success, but health success? Consider these tips:

  • Time it right. Some people are eager to return to work, and to a sense of normalcy; others need more time to recover. There is no right or wrong way, so do what feels right for you.
  • Put your recovery first. That always needs to be the top priority. Adopt an attitude, from the get-go, that you are not going to compromise on your eating disorder recovery.
  • Continue with all your appointments. See your dietitian and visit with your therapist and/or support group as needed. Do not grow lax in these areas!
  • Do not expect too much from yourself. Everyone has setbacks and bad days. Do not beat yourself up or add any stress to your plate.
  • Take breaks. Try taking a 10-minute break for every 50 minutes of work. Allow yourself plenty of time to clear your head and manage your stress.
  • Do not make any compromises with your meal plan. This is critical!
  • Understand what your triggers are. Recognize your own stressors, and have a plan for mitigating or avoiding them as best you can.

Returning to work can be hard, but also healthy—especially as you throw yourself back into your job, reconnect with a sense of purpose, and—most importantly—continue to put your recovery first!
