Recovery Story

We know that eating disorder recovery is a journey. One that fits within the context of someone’s own life story.

At Alsana, we are honored to be a part of our client’s Recovery Story.

It is a story that has many chapters, and we aim to support them through each one. It is used as our structure for the treatment experience and provides a shared language and consistent parameters for clients, the treatment team, families and outpatient providers. The clients are the narrator and the main character of their own Recovery Story, but often the eating disorder has been competing for those roles. Through each chapter, clients regain the strength of their authentic voice and reclaim a more rooted, engaged and whole-hearted version of their life. Recovery Story ensures that everyone has a clear understanding of a client’s progress as well as their struggles. It is designed to help hold each person accountable for their personal recovery goals. Each chapter and each level of care are essential parts of the full Recovery Story.

The Recovery Story begins with the prologue.

    IT IS THE INTRODUCTION.

A gentle opening before the story starts. During Prologue, clients will be oriented to our program, complete assessments and set personal goals for recovery.

In every story, the first chapter sets the stage.

Chapter One establishes the who and the why. During this chapter, clients will begin to unravel the unhealthy patterns that have no longer been serving them. Clients will identify the functions of their eating disorder and start the work of disconnecting their identity from the disorder.

    Taking Ownership of Recovery.

When clients have demonstrated progress with reaching out for help, utilizing recovery behaviors, and are taking a more active role in their recovery story, they will move to Chapter Two. Clients will begin to feel like they are the main character of their story, not their eating disorder, and they will have more opportunities to practice recovery behaviors with the support of the team.

    Recovery Takes the Lead

Chapter Three is the climax of the story, where the client, as the main character, reaches an important milestone with a deep connection to and motivation for recovery; while it is not the end, it is where the hard work starts to pay off as clients consistently choose recovery over the eating disorder and gain increased opportunities for independence.

    Preparing for the Next Chapter.

As the Recovery Story nears its end, the Epilogue represents the transition out of treatment or to the next level of care, where clients have earned greater autonomy and focus on creating a safe, supportive transition into the next part of their life story.
