At Alsana, we believe that eating disorder recovery is a personal journey that fits within the context of each client’s life story. Each experience is unique and requires customized support during every chapter.

Let’s break down the chapters of our Recovery Story framework and dig deeper into why we believe this clinical philosophy is such a powerful tool for healing.

The Recovery Story framework is our structure for the treatment experience, providing a shared language and consistent parameters for clients, families, the treatment team, and outpatient providers. Each chapter and level of care play an essential part in the full Recovery Story.

The client is the main character and narrator of their own Recovery Story, but oftentimes, the eating disorder competes for these roles. During each chapter, the client works to rediscover their authentic voice and reclaim a more rooted, engaged, and whole-hearted version of their life. With this approach to treatment, everyone involved has a clear understanding of the client’s progress and struggles, helping to hold each person accountable for their personal recovery goals

Now, we’ll take a closer look at the five chapters of the Recovery Story.

The Prologue

We begin with the Prologue, a gentle opening before the story truly begins. During this introductory moment, clients orient themselves to our program, complete their assessments, and set personal goals for recovery.

Chapter One

As with every story, Chapter One sets the stage. During the first chapter, we work with clients to establish the who and the why. Clients begin to unravel unhealthy patterns that no longer serve them. They identify the functions of their eating disorder and start to disconnect their identity from the disorder.

Chapter Two

Once clients show progress with reaching out for help and demonstrating recovery behaviors, they naturally play a more active part in their Recovery Story. As they return to their role as the main character of their lives, they move to Chapter Two. During this time, they have more opportunities to practice recovery behaviors with the support of their treatment team.

Chapter Three

Chapter Three is the climax of the story. During this chapter, clients — as the authors of their own stories — reach an important milestone: a deep connection with and motivation for recovery. Although Chapter Three is not the end, it is the chapter where the hard work starts to pay off. Clients consistently choose recovery over the eating disorder and experience increased independence.

The Epilogue

As the Recovery Story nears its end, the Epilogue represents the transition out of treatment or into the next level of care. Clients have earned greater autonomy and readiness for the next steps. Their focus, then, is on creating a safe, supportive, and sustainable transition into a new chapter of their life story.

At Alsana, we are honored to be a part of each client’s Recovery Story.
