Affirmations for Healthy Body Image

  Body Image, Eating Disorders, Blog

Relationships take work. The relationships we have with our bodies are no exception.

Creating a healthy body image takes practice and constant vigilance as one’s body and circumstances change. With diet culture constantly bombarding us with misinformation, it is important to check in on a regular basis to assess the effect these messages might be having.

Achieving a healthier body image requires looking at the body through a lens of compassion, acceptance and gratitude to replace the lens of judgment that society tends to impose on us. Affirmations are just one tool for helping someone struggling with negative body image to peek through a compassionate lens and befriend the body. Affirmations are positive statements in the present tense and can be powerful, effective tools in challenging and overcoming self-sabotaging or negative thoughts.

Since body dissatisfaction and poor body image are not responses to body imperfection, we cannot combat them on the battleground of fitness, wellness, or body “improvement;” to heal, perceptions and old beliefs must change.

Below are some affirmations for cultivating and maintaining a healthy body image. You may…

  • …write these on sticky notes and put them on your mirror or wherever you’ll be sure to see them.
  • …incorporate these into an existing meditation or breath work practice.
  • … journal or write yourself a letter on some of these topics.
  • …share these affirmations with a friend who is struggling.
  • …just keep them in the back of your mind for whenever you need to center and ground yourself.
