I am so excited to have a residential eating disorder treatment center back in Birmingham! I have worked at Alsana’s day treatment program (sometimes called partial hospitalization program or PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP) in our Birmingham location since 2013. Prior to Alsana, I worked at a residential treatment center (RTC) for eating disorders for four years. I am excited to round out the levels of care that we offer in Birmingham and reach clients with eating disorders.

A Warm and Inviting Environment

Some of the things that I feel passionate about are that every client who enters the doors of Alsana feels a sense of calm and compassion necessary to start their recovery process. As we thoughtfully planned the residential program we were building in Birmingham, creating an environment that is healing and respectful to each client who enters our doors emerged as a priority to me. We thought of the little details that would impact the environment of care. No detail was too small, as we know the sacrifice and courage that it takes to come to treatment. We felt it was important to create spaces that were warm and inviting, not sterile or unintentional.

I have such respect for each client who entrusts this team with their medical care, their time, their financial resources and most important, entrusts us to hold their stories with care and respect. I can imagine the amount of vulnerability and motivation that it would take to decide to come to treatment, to leave home and comfort, and to pack belongings in anticipation of weeks or months away from home battling and fighting for life. It is an honor to be a part of this journey.

Some of the things that we offer in Birmingham are a beautiful kitchen where our clients can do kitchen experientials with their treatment team. This can be one-on-one with our chef or with the assistance of the dietitian and/or therapist. We also use local parks to engage in expressive therapies and recreational therapies. This is part of our movement program that offers our clients opportunities to move and explore their relationships with their bodies throughout their recovery process. We offer other expressive therapies including expressive art, equine therapy, and movement groups. We feel like it is important to engage the body and the emotional process beyond cognitive and talk therapies.

Who We Treat in Our Residential Program

We are gender inclusive and treat adults over the age of 18. One of my favorite parts of my job is learning the stories of the clients that I work with and watching their stories intersect and weave into the stories of their peers. This can be such a healing dynamic in the treatment process. It is interesting to see commonalities surface and see shame dissipate and neutralize. We are excited to be in Birmingham and energized to engage in this process with our clients!

We welcome clients from all over the world to our residential eating disorder treatment program. If you or a loved one are in need of help, let’s connect you with an understanding counselor who can recommend the next steps for your situation. Call us at 888.822.8938 or fill out a form and we’ll get right back to you. We can’t wait to talk to you!
