Managing Dysregulation in the Virtual Treatment Space
Presented By Sara Mischler, MA, LPC
Director of Clinical Services
Abstract:
The amygdala is the “fire alarm” of the brain. It is in charge of the fight, flight, and freeze responses, which have allowed humans to survive for millions of years by effectively scanning the environment for threats to survival. Once the amygdala has completely taken over, it’s too late for de-escalation techniques. The rational part of the brain is off-line, and more primitive survival instincts take over. During this presentation, you’ll learn the basic science behind the dysregulation of the amygdala, as well as signs and symptoms to help you identify dysregulation in your clients. We’ll also discuss techniques to help clients regulate and tame the amygdala within a virtual treatment program.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand how and why the threat system is activated in the brain
2. Distinguish between client cues and triggers
3. Learn ways to increase clients’ interoceptive awareness and accuracy
4. Identify “Bottom-up” techniques for activating clients’ Soothe System
