Insurance Law Supports Those Who Struggle With Eating Disorders

  Uncategorized, Blog

Thanks to a bill recently signed by Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, people who struggle with eating disorders will have the benefit of insurance protection under the law. The new legislation, which goes into effect in August, mandates insurance payments for all aspects of eating disorders. The law recognizes the complexity of eating disorders and requires insurance companies to pay for treatment of physical and mental health issues. Alsana’s CEO, Nancy Albus, celebrates the new law as a way to help ensure that people will be able to remain in treatment beyond initial weight stabilization in order to deal with the underlying mental health issues. She also sees the legislation as a model for other states to follow and as a way to educate the public about the complexity of eating disorders. Eating disorders are public health issues, and, as such, they need the attention, education and awareness of the general population.

Mental Health Aspect of Eating Disorders Recognized In New Law

An individual’s eating behavior is a symptom of a much deeper issue. It takes time, therapy, counseling and dietary education to help someone recover from an eating disorder. Reaching a balance in weight is not an indicator of restored health. Early childhood traumas and an inability to cope with emotions is often the reason people turn to food to self-medicate. Missouri’s new law will give people the time they need to learn new behaviors and new attitudes. We agree with the National Eating Disorders Association and other advocates of this vital legislation, who realize that successful treatment includes more than medical care for physical repercussions of eating disorders. It also includes mental health services provided by therapists and counselors who can help people uncover the underlying issues. Now insurance will cover those services.
