Types of Eating Disorders.

Our admissions team is here to provide guidance and support for individuals struggling with eating disorders and the people who care about them.

  • Anorexia Nervosa: An eating disorder characterized by restriction of food intake, intense fear of gaining weight, and excessive weight loss.
  • Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID): More than “extreme picky eating,” ARFID involves difficulty consuming enough food to meet energy and nutritional needs. Dietary restriction is not driven by body image concerns or a desire to lose weight.
  • Binge Eating Disorder (BED): Characterized by consuming large amounts of food in a short period of time, often accompanied by a sense of loss of control and followed by feelings of shame.
  • Bulimia Nervosa: Involves cycles of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, laxative misuse, fasting, or excessive exercise.
  • Diabulimia: Also known as ED-DMT1, this diagnosis applies to individuals with diabetes who manipulate insulin use to influence weight.
  • Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED): Diagnosed when clinically significant eating disorder symptoms do not meet criteria for another DSM-5 diagnosis. Symptoms may include obsessions with food or exercise, feeling overweight despite weight loss, loss of control when eating, and irregular eating patterns.
