On November 7th 2014 at Mehlville High School Black Box, Recovery as Performance present the original play: I Remember Justine, the story of Mateo, a young man who meets a woman Justine, and his journey home. I Remember Justine utilizes the method of therapeutic theater expressing the struggles and insights shared from our individual stories in recovery.

Through drama, the depth and transformation of personal ordeals can be actively explored and shared. Alsana’s Laura Wood has been participating with this project helping attendants to share through drama and storytelling the feelings and resonance of their experience.

“Putting on a play also parallels the journey of recovery,” Laura says, “and within the process, persons working on recovery gain insight.”

Laura hosted the 2012 Central Region Conference sponsored by the National Association for Drama Therapy at Alsana Treatment Center conference center. She facilitates individual and group expressive therapies with the experience taken from her Masters of Art in Drama Therapy and Counseling at New York University.

Recovery as Performance utilizes this modality to support persons with eating disorders who are facing challenges after intensive treatments. I Remember Justine uses metaphor and dramatic distancing to explore certain themes valuable to participants on their journey to recovery.

This dynamic and illuminating show is 40 minutes and is facilitated by donation only. Proceeds will go to cover production costs and any left-over will be used towards the cost of furthering this concept and project. We hope you will come join us to promote recovery and the arts for this fantastic evening!
